The winners of the INNO Student Challenge 2022
In the fall of 2021 students could submit innovative ideas for nature conservation or to promote sustainability. After getting through the first round, the eight finalists had to write a more comprehensive proposal and give a pitch to the judges. On the 11th of May the award ceremony was held in the Muntgebouw in Utrecht and the three winning teams were announced. Each team was rewarded with €10.000 and a professional coach to help realise their idea. Hereby we would like to introduce to you to the three winning teams!
Karbon Biru, Ephora Solutions & AI for Wildlife
Karbon Biru
‘Karbon Biru’ was the winning idea by Yulia Ratnasari (founder), Pedro Patique, Irlanda Mora and Nasira Ahs. It is a mangrove and wetlands carbon sequestration project that goes beyond conventional ‘pay to plant a tree’ model. They want to innovate on how to close the loop and induce regenerative economy via functional diversity. The project will first be carried out in Indonesia and future expansion to Brazil, Mexico and Pakistan.
Ephora Solutions
Evi-Mara van Beekhuizen, Camilla Visconti and Roos van Buren thought of ‘Ephora Solutions’: a project that focuses on the creation of a never-before seen fabric product made from recycled materials. This fabric will use jute bags, sourced primarily from coffee bean imports. The aim is to create an innovative and sustainable fabric product using the principles of the circular economy to guide procurement, production, and marketing of the product. This innovation tries to decrease the use of virgin natural textiles such as cotton, wool and silk which are detrimental to the environment.
AI for Wildlife
Together with the rangers of Pilanesberg National Park in South Africa, Buster Franken and Sako Arts are building an autonomous drone with thermal cameras that can search for poachers in the wildlife reserves. They need to build an autonomous drone because there is a severe lack of manpower, causing poaching to continue. The goal is to build a cheap drone that by being AI enabled can be used in any wildlife conservation park on the continent to prevent poaching.
The finale of 2022
Congratulations to our winners and thanks to our donors!
The INNO Student Challenge 2022 could not have been realised without the help of major donors, the jury and personal coaching of Holland Partners & FONA Conservation.
